About us

A youth-led movement for inclusion, built from lived experience.

Youth Disability Talk Out (YDTO) is headquartered in Pretoria, South Africa and registered as a Non-Profit Company. NPC Registered · 2025/02/08.

Our story

YDTO began with a brother. Watching Khaya navigate a world that was not built for him taught our founder something no classroom ever had: exclusion is rarely deliberate, but it is always designed. Inaccessible learning environments, out-of-reach devices and connectivity, and a media landscape where disability stories almost never appear — each one quietly decides who gets to participate.

One in five South African youth live with some form of disability, yet remain underserved in education and digital programmes. YDTO was founded to change that from the inside — youth-led, so that the people most affected by the problem hold the pen.

Today that work runs across three fronts. Awareness through education programmes that change how schools and communities see disability. Inclusion by removing access barriers — physical, digital and social. Empowerment by equipping young people with the tools and platforms to lead their own narrative.

YDTO owns and directs all of its programmes, technology and digital systems. The YDTO Learning Management System was developed to support disability awareness and education programmes delivered by Youth Disability Talk Out NPC. TEAM AF provided technology support.

In our own words

Youth-led means the pen changes hands.

YDTO does not commission outsiders to explain disability. Programmes, campaigns and media are written, facilitated and presented by young people with lived experience — which is why the tone is direct, unsentimental and recognisable to the audiences it is made for.

Seabelo Mabitsela

Founder & Director

Founder · Youth Disability Advocate · Public Speaker

Seabelo founded Youth Disability Talk Out in Pretoria after seeing first-hand how little structured support existed for young people with disabilities in South African schools. What started as conversations became a registered NPC with 320 members, a three-phase schools programme and a growing national footprint.

He leads YDTO's programme delivery and advocacy work, speaking publicly on disability inclusion across radio, television and youth platforms, and has taken the programme beyond South Africa's borders.
